- One model that provides students autonomy over their learning and emphasizes a real world approach is a Fed Ex planning day.
- This is adapted from the idea of providing employees freedom to create and explore a project of their interest in the workplace.
- It is named a Fed Ex day because Fed Ex delivers and the student is expected to deliver upon their idea after a given time period.

The Marshmallow Challenge
Visit http://marshmallowchallenge.com/Instructions.html for lesson instructions. This lesson is great for all grades and ages. Students will use their knowledge of building structures, shapes, and cause and effect as they build and test their structure.
*Fun tip: Have students complete this activity as a pre-assessment. Then, have students discuss the activity as a whole. What worked for the winning group? Why? After a thoughtful discussion and exploration of the engineering design process, have students complete the marshmallow challenge again as a post-assessment.
